Public Focused Archaeological Resource and Preservation Education Grant from the Lincoln County Archaeological Resources Initiative (2025-2027)

NVFCP will maintain a regular presence in Lincoln County. Our plans include a mix of educational activities aimed at both residents and visitors, such as outreach booths at various events and workshops/talks for in-depth exploration of key subjects. Behind the scenes, we will be updating and adding new information on archaeological sites to Nevada Trail Finder, a searchable online resource. To further enhance visitors' experiences along the 260-mile Silver State Trail network, we will also be developing a signage plan to increase the visibility of cultural resource and preservation information along the routes.

Little Red Rock Graffiti Removal and Site Management Consulting

The Howard Hughes Corporation owns the land that Little Red Rock is located on. NVFCP has conducted extensive graffiti removal and developed a partnership to assist with management of the area. NVFCP developed and hosts the littleredrock.org website, created new signage to deter trespassing and impacts to the petroglyph sites in the area. Recently, organized clean up efforts have removed older and more recent trash from the area. Check out our events page to see when the next Stewardship Sunday is taking place.

White River Narrows Archaeological District NRHP Nomination and Graffiti Remediation

Stratum Unlimited LLC has contracted with NVFCP to help with this Lincoln County Archaeological Initiative Grant project. Work includes updating IMACS records, completing forms for newly discovered sites, updating the NRHP Nomination for the district, and camouflaging scratched and incised graffiti in the area.

Mt. Irish Interpretive Signage and Restroom Mural

NVFCP President and artist Katie Hoffman created a playful mural in the vault toilet that reflects the content of the eight new signs—adding a bit of fun to the educational experience.

Biennial Three Corners Archaeological Conference

NVFCP is happy to be a part of the Southern Nevada Agency Partnership- Cultural Resource Team (SNAP-CRT) comprised of federal and state archaeologists, area museums, and nonprofits. This group meets on a quarterly basis and hosts the regional archaeology conference. NVFCP develops the program, hosts the event website, and provides other support.

Tecopa Charcoal Kilns and Cold Creek Ranch Interpretive Signage

Tread Lightly!, the U.S. Forest Service, and the Nevada Offroad Association contracted with NVFCP to create interpretive signage for the Tecopa Charcoal Kilns and Cold Creek Ranch historic sites. These sites are along high use offroad trails in the Spring Mountains that lie between Las Vegas and Pahrump. The signs included historical and preservation information along with Tread Lightly principles and offroad maps.

Modern Desert Markings: An Homage to Las Vegas Area Land Art

An art exhibition curated by Katie Hoffman and Hikmet Sidney Loe, funded by Nevadans for Cultural Preservation, Nevada Arts Council, National Endowment for the Arts, Nevada Humanities, National Endowment for the Humanities, and an anonymous donor. The exhibition goals were to reintroduce the public to five artworks in the deserts around Las Vegas by presenting a new body of work inspired by visits to the historic pieces, and to document the current condition of the historic Land Art landscapes. A StoryMap was developed to ensure access to the exhibition's work and connection to the landscape.

Springs Preserve Online Collections Database

NVFCP was contracted by the Preserve to digitize records and create an online database for the public to be able to view the collection. See the collection, on the Preserve's Archaeology page here.

Pine Grove Mining District Cemetery Fence Clearance and Signage

The Pine Nut Mountains Trail Association and the Nevada Off-road Association contracted with NVFCP to prepare documentation to allow for the install of a temporary buck and rail fence to keep vehicle traffic from driving into a historic cemetery. NVFCP was also contracted to create interpretive signage to attach to the fence. A total of four signs were created with information about the cemetery, mining area, recreation in the area, and the sign shared here that covers how to visit the cemetery responsibly.

Basin and Range National Monument Interpretive Signage

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) had NVFCP create 6 interpretive kiosks at archaeological, historical, and natural sites of interest. NVFCP wrote the content, selected images, and followed strict BLM standards.

Site Condition Assessment Training

NVFCP partnered with the Nevada Site Stewardship Program (NSSP) to train volunteers to conduct site condition assessments for land managing entities.  Agency archaeologists have less time than ever to conduct site visits to check on the condition of sites. These volunteers help them manage sites they wouldn't have time to visit.
