Join us for a presentation and open discussion with Tribal Historic Preservation Officer Sean Scruggs from the Fort Independence Tribe of Paiute Indians.
It is critical that the public understand the tribal relationship to the land and the natural world so that sacred places can be better monitored, observed and protected from looting and unnecessary destruction.
The field of archaeology needs to be transformed. It is time for tribes to gain and maintain Cultural Sovereignty. We are not a “prehistoric” people who magically arrived in North America. Tribes have Creation Stories and deep, complex and longstanding cultural beliefs. Archaeology tries to unravel the tribal past by viewing us an extinct race of people when the truth is that genocide, colonization, assimilation and industrialization has worked to actively destroy our people and culture. Most tribes have “place based” beliefs that ties them to the Traditional Cultural Landscape. The natural world also explains the need for Tribal Cultural Resources to be left and protected as they are and as they were left by our people.
This is an open Teams Meeting where you will be able to be seen and speak. The link to the meeting will be emailed to you with a reminder before the talk.
